About Light Modifiers
Light modifiers are devices that can improve the lighting in photos. Whether a scene has ambient or artificial light, you can use a light modifier to achieve a particular mood. With modifiers, you're able to highlight something important in a scene, soften harshness, or flatter a subject. Modifiers can be freestanding, handheld, or designed to fit over a camera lens. Some are collapsible and portable, while others require space and careful handling.
Umbrellas
Photography umbrellas are collapsible, portable light softeners. They're some of the most affordable light modifiers you can find, and they're suitable for virtually any type of lighting, including off-camera speedlights, sunlight, strobes/monolights, as well as continuous light sources.
Softboxes
A softbox will diffuse harsh lighting and eliminate shadows from your portrait shots. Softboxes are one of the three major soft lighting equipment necessities (the others are scrims and umbrellas) used in photography. It diffuses bright light and spreads it evenly over subjects. A softbox can serve as a primary or secondary light source in a scene. It works with daylight, flashguns, and continuous light sources.
Reflectors
A collapsible reflector is one of the most useful lighting accessories for all types of photography. Whether you're doing wedding or product photography, reflectors offer an effective way to bounce back light to your subject to improve the quality of your images. They're affordable, lightweight, easy to transport, and don't require any source of power. You can use photography reflectors with natural or artificial light from flashes or other sources.
